Times City (Foshan) held a widely anticipated Mahjong contest on April 12, 2015, bringing approximately 1,000 participants to the Sales Center. Mahjong lovers from throughout the city of Sanshui came to experience the fun and suspense amid fierce competition.

The contest consisted of preliminaries, semifinals and finals rounds, as emphasized by the person in charge of the event. There were opportunities to win exciting prizes, and the final winner—"the Mahjong King"—stood to receive up to RMB 3600 in cash.

Mahjong is an essential part of life for Sanshui residents, but the rules of the game vary from one region to another. Accordingly, in order to ensure a level playing field for all contestants, Times City (Foshan) selected the three most common game rules. The principle of the competition was to have fun with this great traditional game.

The Sales Center welcomed nearly 1,000 players at 8:30 on the morning of the event. Under the guidance of the staff, each player signed his or her name, and then the game started. As specified in the rules, each participant would be given RMB 3,000 in chips. Then, after an hour of play, the one with more chips would move on to the semifinal round. By 6:00 that evening, a total of had 90 players had entered the semifinal, which was slated to take place on April 18.
